Elementary Endorsement Requirements

For all endorsement areas, students seeking a particular endorsement must meet the requirements of that major. For some endorsement areas, additional courses are required outside of the subject major and education minor to meet competencies required for licensure. Requirements for each endorsement area are listed below.

Elementary Endorsement (preK-6)
Candidates seeking an elementary education preK- 6 endorsement must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 units) each in English, history and social sciences, mathematics, and science addressing competencies set forth in this chapter OR complete the following:

English
Complete 6 semester hours (2 units) in English and pass a rigorous assessment in elementary English prescribed by the Board of Education.

  • One FYS course and one FSLT course will satisfy this requirement.
  • A score of 5 on the English literature AP exam will count as one course requirement.
  • A score of 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level Subject Exam in English (A) will count as one course requirement.

History and Social Sciences
Complete 6 semester hours (2 units) in history and social sciences, complete a methods of teaching elementary history and social sciences course, and pass a rigorous assessment in elementary history and social sciences prescribed by the Board of Education.

  • One FSHT course and one FSSA course will satisfy this requirement.
  • A score of 4 or 5 on any of the following AP exams will also satisfy these requirements: European History, Psychology, US Government and/or US History.
  • A score of 5 on one of the following AP exams will count as one course requirement: Macroeconomics or Microeconomics.
  • A score of 6 or 7 on any of the following IB Higher Level Subject Exams will also satisfy these requirements: Economics, All IB Histories and/or Psychology.

Mathematics
Complete 6 semester hours (2 units) in mathematics, complete a methods of teaching elementary mathematics course, and pass a rigorous assessment in elementary mathematics prescribed by the Board of Education.

  • One FSSR course will count as one course requirement.
  • A score of 4 or 5 on any of the following AP exams will satisfy these requirements: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Computer Science A and/or Statistics.
  • A score of 6 or 7 on any of the following IB Higher Level Subject Exams will also satisfy these requirements: Computer Science and/or Mathematics.

Science
Complete 6 semester hours (2 units) in laboratory sciences in TWO science disciplines, complete a methods of teaching elementary science course, and pass a rigorous assessment in elementary science prescribed by the Board of Education. Please note course fulfilling this requirement MUST come from 2 different disciplines.

  • One Natural Science (FSNB, FSNC, FSNP) course will count as one course requirement.
  • A score of 4 or 5 on one of the following AP exams will count as one course requirement: Biology, Environmental Science, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics B, Physics C: Mechanics or Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism.
  • A score of 5 on the AP Chemistry exam will count as one course requirement.
  • A score of 5, 6 or 7 on any of the following IB Higher Level Subject Exams will also satisfy these requirements: Biology and/or Chemistry.
  • A score of 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level Subject Exam in Physics will count as one course requirement.

Adding Endorsements Through Testing
Students who meet the elementary endorsement requirements may add any endorsement for which they take and submit passing scores on the appropriate Praxis II examination.
