Teaching

Education professors at Richmond are dedicated to preparing teachers for the 21st century classroom, teaching them skills that will help them nurture the development and growth of children and adolescents. Disparities in the American classroom can be overcome if students graduate with solid strategies they can use to reach across cultural, language and developmental boundaries.

Professors intend for the education minor to be intense; the program or study requires more credit hours than some majors. However, students do not major in education because it is vital for all teachers to be well versed in at least one critical subject area. Courses incorporate educational theory, research, practice and educational policy to ground all minors in the academic discipline of education, regardless of whether they ever enter the teaching profession. For students to truly be successful teachers, they must be capable of taking the theory, research and policy pieces, blending them and applying them in practice.
