Elementary Endorsement Requirements

Students seeking an endorsement in elementary education (PreK-6) must meet the requirements of the major or the minor (with teaching internship and capstone seminar) and complete additional course work in the areas described below. Please note that many of the courses required to meet the licensure competencies will also meet general education requirements.*

  • English – 2 units

    FYS 100 (1 unit)*

    FSLT English (1 unit)* – One course chosen from the following or the equivalent:
    • ENGL 203 Children’s Literature
    • ENGL 204 Literature and Culture
    • ENGL 208 Twentieth-Century American Fiction
    • ENGL 221 Introduction to Poetry
    • ENGL 222 Short Fiction
    • ENGL 223 The Modern Novel
    • ENGL 224 Great Novels
    • ENGL 230 Women in Modern Literature
    • ENGL 231 African-American Literature
    • ENGL 234 Shakespeare

    A score of 5 on the English literature AP exam will satisfy the FSLT requirement.

    A score of 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level Subject Exam in English (A) will satisfy the FSLT requirement.

  • Mathematics – 2 units

    Algebra and Geometry (1 unit)* – MATH 211 Calculus I or equivalent

    • A score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus (AB or BC) exam will satisfy the Calculus I requirement.
    • A score of 6 or higher on the IB Higher Level Exam in Mathematics will satisfy the Calculus I requirement.

    Probability and Statistics (1 unit) – DSST 189 Introduction to Statistical Modeling or equivalent.

    • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam with satisfy the statistics requirement.
  • Laboratory Science – 2 units

    Earth Science (1 unit)* – ENVR/GEOG 250 Introduction to Earth Systems and Physical Geography

    Students must complete one additional course with a lab (1 unit) in one of the three core scientific disciplines listed below:

    Biology (1 unit) – One course chosen from the following or the equivalent:

    • BIOL 108 Environmental Biology
    • BIOL 109 Introduction to Ecology
    • BIOL 111 Marine Biology of the Chesapeake Bay
    • BIOL 120 Modern Concepts in Biology
    • BIOL 199 Introduction to Biological Thinking

    A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Biology exam will satisfy the biology requirement.

    A score of 5 or higher on the IB Higher Level Exam in Biology will satisfy the biology requirement.

    OR

    Chemistry (1 unit) – One course chosen from the following or the equivalent:

    • CHEM/ENVR 110 Pollutants in the Environment
    • CHEM 111 Chemistry Detectives: Solving Real-World Puzzles
    • CHEM 112 Biochemistry in the Real World
    • CHEM 113 Catching Criminals with Chemistry
    • CHEM 114 The Chemistry of Cooking and Modernist Cuisine
    • CHEM 115 Chemistry in Art

    A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry exam will satisfy the chemistry requirement.

    A score of 5 or higher on the IB Higher Level Subject Exam in Chemistry will satisfy the chemistry requirement.

    A score of 50 or higher on the CLEP exam for Chemistry will satisfy the chemistry requirement.

    OR

    Physics (1 unit) – One course chosen from the following or the equivalent:

    • PHYS 125 Elements of Physics with Lab
    • PHYS 127 Algebra-Based General Physics 1 with Lab
    • PHYS 131 Calculus-Based General Physics 1 with Lab

    A score of 4 or 5 on one of the following AP exams: Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics B, Physics C: Mechanics or Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism will satisfy the physics requirement.

    A score of 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level Subject Exam in Physics will satisfy the physics requirement.

  • History and Social Sciences – 3 units

    US history (1 unit)* – One FSHT course in US history or the equivalent

    • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP U.S. History exam will satisfy the U.S. history requirement.
    • A score of 5 or higher on the IB Higher Level Subject Exam in U.S. History will satisfy the U.S. history requirement.

    Civics (1 unit) – PLSC 220 Introduction to American Government or the equivalent

    • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP US Government exam will satisfy the civics requirement.

    Economics (1 unit)* – ECON 101 Principles of Microeconomics or the equivalent

    • A score of 5 on the AP Microeconomics exam will satisfy the economics requirement.
    • A score of 6 or 7 on the IB Economics exam will satisfy the economics requirement.
    • A minimum score of 50 on the CLEP exam for Microeconomics will satisfy the economics requirement.
